Hypertension is a disease that can be controlled

Final International University Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Professor Benter comments on The European Society of Cardiology 2024 updated hypertension and high blood pressure management guidelines.

New guidelines recommend a new category of high blood pressure and more ambitious and intensive treatment targets.

Hypertension and cardiovascular diseases are the diseases that cause the most deaths in the world.

If hypertension is not treated, it leads to serious complications such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure or kidney disease.

Hypertension is called the silent killer because it acts very insidiously and people may not be aware that they have hypertension. This can lead to serious consequences.

People with a history of high blood pressure in their first-degree relatives are at high risk of developing hypertension. In fact, hypertension is a disease that can be controlled if care is taken, because many hypertension medications have been developed.

The new guidelines published in the European Heart Journal are designed to help more patients reach their evidence-based blood pressure treatment goals and to align eligibility criteria for blood pressure-lowering medications with current clinical trials.

The 2024 guidelines continue to define hypertension as blood pressure higher than 140/90. However, a new category has been introduced where systolic blood pressure of 120-139 and diastolic blood pressure of 70-89 is defined as "high." This new high blood pressure category was introduced to facilitate consideration of more intensive blood pressure treatment goals in people at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).
