Spaghetti Bridge Competition Held at Final International University

A total of 35 students from 3 Universities participated in a Spaghetti Bridge competition held at Final International University and sponsored by Onan Ltd. The competition aimed to consolidate knowledge acquired in technical classes by building weight-bearing bridges constructed from pasta. After the opening ceremony, FIU Faculty of Engineering instructor, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Amin Riazi introduced the competition rules and concept with the help of an illustrative film. Twelve groups of students then set to work to design and build their bridges over a three-hour period. Feras Aljamal, Rama Mosalli and Osama Saeed won the first prize, Waleed Ahmed, Omer MM Khalaf and Esat Furkan Parlatan the second prize and Ahmed Karmo, Maamoun Alyasın, Shahd Karmo the third.  There were also two special prizes for design.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, FIU Rector, Dr. Abdullah Y. Öztoprak, noted the importance of cooperation, collaboration and groupwork in the engineering profession. The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Dr. Derviş Deniz, further drew attention to the social nature of the activity, as well as the application and reinforcement of concepts introduced in lessons. He also thanked the sponsor of the event, Onan Ltd., and emphasised the value of partnership between universities and the private sector.
