First year FIU students training to become Pysical Education Students have participated in a weekend camp intended to develop their knowledge and skills in living in harmony with the natural environment. The applied camping education the students are undergoing includes basic camping, hiking and mountaineering education and the camp was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Taner Erdogan.
Over the weekend, with cold and rainy weather conditions prevailing, the students learned to put up their own tents, light and extinguish fires, how to clean and prepare their own meals, and how to protect the natural environment, as well as taking part safely in regulated mountain walks. The campers sat round a warm fire at night singing campside songs. They also enjoyed visits from FIU Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Ibrahim Taşel and FIU Rector, Prof. Dr. Abdullah Y. Öztoprak and other university lecturers.
As future teachers, the students are thus practising and preparing to pass on skills and knowledge which contribute to the mental, physical, psychological, social, emotional and personality development of young people, and the camp was a tremendous example of how theory and practice are integrated at our University.
