FIU Hosts Inspiring Seminar on Women’s Role in Sustainable Tourism

In honor of International Women’s Day on March 8th, the School of Tourism & Culinary Arts at Final International University organized an impactful seminar on sustainable tourism and the role of women in the industry. The event, held at Seminar Hall 2, brought together representatives from four universities and four tourism faculties to discuss the significant contributions of women in tourism and the ongoing efforts toward sustainability and gender equality.

Remembering the Struggles and Triumphs of Women

While we celebrate the achievements of women today, it is essential to remember those who have sacrificed their lives in the fight for women’s rights. The origins of International Women’s Day trace back 167 years to a tragic event in a textile factory in America, where 129 women workers, striking for better rights, lost their lives in a devastating fire. Their legacy continues to inspire the global movement for equality.

Closer to home, we must also recognize the silent struggles of women who continue to suffer injustices. The recent loss of Anastasia Melega, who ended her life, is a tragic reminder that the fight for women’s rights is far from over. Our commitment as women academics in tourism is to raise our voices for sustainable tourism and women’s rights, fostering future leaders who will drive meaningful change on our island and beyond.

A Collaborative Effort for a Better Future

The seminar featured esteemed academic teachers in tourism, including:

  • Prof. Dr. Nesrin Bahcelerli, Dean of the Tourism Faculty, Near East University

  • Prof. Dr. Hale Ozdogac Ozgit, Dean of the Tourism Faculty, Cyprus International University

  • Assist. Prof. Dr. Tuna Karatepe, Vice-Dean of the Tourism Faculty, Eastern Mediterranean University

The event was also honored by the presence of Dr. İçim Çağiner Kavuklu, President of GIKAD, whose inspiring contributions to the sector continue to empower women.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the Golden Team for their dedication in organizing the 1st World Women’s Day Seminar, as well as to the Final International University Family for their unwavering support. This seminar marks just the beginning of a continued effort to advocate for equality, sustainability, and the empowerment of women in tourism and beyond.

Together, we will shape a future where women’s voices are heard, their rights are respected, and their contributions to the tourism industry are celebrated.
