The School of Foreign Languages at Final International Universıty (FIU) plays an important role in providing intensive instruction in English to students who have been admitted to English-medium degree programs, but do not possess the English proficiency level adequate for their departmental coursework. Therefore students study at SFL for one academic semester/year in order to acquire and develop English language knowledge and skills required for their respective degree programs. The period of intensive language instruction also enables students to adjust to the academic environment at FIU and to develop study skills essential to their discipline-related work.
At the start of a new academic year, students take an internationally recognized computer-based Placement Test which allocates them to their respective language programs as follows: Beginners, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, Intermediate. Over the course of intensive language instruction, students routinely take progress tests and quizzes. The syllabus of the intensive English language program includes 25 hours of highly interactive instruction comprising class-work, computer-based work, library work and project work.
Mission
Our mission is to provide students with a high level of English language education based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The School is committed to helping all students, whether studying departmental programs in English or Turkish to graduate with the highest possible level of English and foreign language proficiency. We also act on the belief that a solid language program does far more than develop language skills, but provides students with a full range of interpersonal, intercultural, technological and study skills that will serve them throughout their education and future lives.
Vision
Our vision is to become an internationally accredited language institution at the tertiary level, providing high quality language programs as well as international professional development courses in English Language Teaching both in North Cyprus and the region. We aim to stand out as a leader and model of contemporary practice in this regard.
Structure
The School of Foreign Languages at Final International University (FIU) comprises the Intensive English Division and the Modern Languages Division. SFL plays an important role in providing English language courses to both students and the community. The English language curriculum at SFL is based broadly on progression through the CEFR (The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) and levels and courses are designed, developed, and implemented accordingly.
Values
In designing the SFL program and in welcoming our new students into our classrooms and to our university, we do our utmost to provide classes that are useful, challenging and enjoyable. In all SFL classes and outside the classroom, we try to ensure that we are:
Enabling genuine intercultural exchange, understanding and appreciation.
