A workshop titled “Research Methods and Career Paths in Social Sciences” was successfully organized with the participation of distinguished academics and engaged students, bringing together methodological insight and career-oriented perspectives in the field of social sciences.
The first session was delivered by Dr. Islam Elgammal, who focused on the foundations and application of qualitative research. The session explored the philosophical underpinnings of qualitative inquiry, particularly constructionism, emphasizing how meaning is shaped through individual perception and interpretation. Dr. Elgammal introduced major qualitative research designs, including case study, phenomenology, and grounded theory, highlighting their distinct purposes and methodological implications. The presentation also addressed key components of research design, such as purposeful and snowball sampling strategies, as well as commonly used data collection methods including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observation. Particular attention was given to thematic analysis as a systematic approach to interpreting qualitative data, outlining stages from data familiarization and coding to theme development and theoretical integration. The session further emphasized the importance of methodological rigor, ethical considerations, and positioning research for academic publication. The second session, delivered by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nafiya Guden, focused on career opportunities in the field of tourism and hospitality as a key domain within the social sciences. The presentation highlighted the global significance of the tourism industry, noting its continued growth, economic impact, and expanding employment opportunities worldwide. Dr. Guden discussed the interdisciplinary nature of social sciences and their application in tourism, underlining emerging career paths such as sustainability consulting, digital marketing, and the integration of artificial intelligence in tourism services. She emphasized the importance of both technical and soft skills, including adaptability, communication, and cultural awareness, in shaping successful careers. The session also addressed sustainability and ethical responsibility in tourism, encouraging students to consider the broader social and environmental impacts of their professional roles. Practical career strategies, including internships, networking, digital competencies, and specialization, were presented as essential steps for career development. The workshop, moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Farzad Safaeimanesh, emphasized the evolving role of social science graduates, not only as professionals but as contributors to societal and economic transformation. The event provided valuable insights into both academic research practices and future career pathways, fostering a comprehensive understanding of the field among participants. "
